Fun at Food Festivals

Around this time of year, the local Greek churches all hold food festivals. My husband and I had our first “date” at a food festival many years ago in high school and it somehow became a tradition to go every single year together. In the past few weeks we have gone to two: a middle eastern and a Greek. It is pretty pricey but since they only come once a year we don’t mind splurging and each getting a meal. Sometimes we get the same thing but most of the time we get different meals so that we can share.

We decided to go the the middle eastern festival for lunch so we split an entrée. We decided to get the Oasis entrée which includes one half baked chicken, grape leaves, rice pilaf, green beans (deliciously spiced), hummus and pita.

As if that wasn’t enough, we decided to get 4 meat pies so we could have two each.

After stuffing ourselves, we decided to walk around the booths a bit before we decided that it wouldn’t be right not to get a dessert. We decided on the Hareeseh which is essentially moist cake with a hint of rose flavor covered in slivered almonds. Try saying no to that.

At the second food festival, we decided to each get a meal because it was our dinner. I got the Souvlakia which includes a lamb skewer, rice pilaf, salad and a roll. My husband decided to get the Pastichio which is like a Greek lasagna that came with spanakopita (a spinach pie), tiropita (a cheese pastry), salad and a roll. For dessert, we always get the loukoumathes (Greek donuts) which are fried balls dipped in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon.

My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Hope your having a great week!
